Seven Principles of Pigment Colour Matching in Paint Formulation Design

Pigments for paint selection can be divided into nine basic tones, such as red, orange, yellow, green, purple, blue, white, black and metallic luster. Different wavelengths present different tones, and the same wavelength range has different sensitivity to tone change. At the same time, the brightness of color varies with the purity of tone or color. Therefore, in the formulation design of colored coatings, the selection of pigments is very important and should be adjusted according to the color standard of various pigments. In addition, the physical properties of the selected pigments such as particle size, colouring power, covering power, suspension, optical rotation resistance and heat resistance should also be considered. 

(1) In the color matching of coatings, five basic colors, red, yellow, blue, white and black, should be selected as far as possible for color matching.            

(2) In color matching of coatings, mixing and matching of coloring pigments with similar properties should be selected as far as possible so as not to change the structure or composition of the coatings and make the color of the coatings different.           

(3) In the specific color matching, as far as possible choose the same color pigments with different brightness, so as to form a primary and secondary, light and shade coordinated paint color;            

(4) The density difference between different pigments should not be too large when matching paint.            

(5) In the color matching of paints, there should be no reaction between the pigments. For example, when the pigments containing lead, copper and mercury are mixed with the pigments containing sulphur, the color darkens; when the pigments are mixed with chrome yellow, the red fades easily.            

(6) In the color matching of coatings, if you want to improve the brightness of the paint, you can add a small amount of dyes; if you want to improve the color purity of the paint, you can add a suitable amount of white pigment with large covering power to cover up a small amount of impurities in the paint;           

(7) In the same paint formulation system, the variety of coloring pigments should not be too many, so as to avoid the introduction of colors, so that the color of the paint is dim.
